The Archaeology of Swalcliffe

Carved stone.

Join us at Swalcliffe Barn to find out more about it’s exciting and intriguing archaeological history. Staff and volunteers will be onsite all day with activities including:

  • Finds Surgery: Have you found an object in the ground that you would like identifying? If so Oxfordshire’s Finds Liaison Officer will be available throughout the day to identify your finds and to provide guidance on whether your object might be useful to record with the Portable Antiquities Scheme.
  • Finds Handling: Ed will also have a selection of objects from the Oxfordshire Museums handling collection that you can get up close with.
  • Everyone welcome: We will have a family friendly activity and trail available.
  • Talks and tours will be taking place at specific times throughout the day. Please book a place so we have an idea of numbers. This can be done via emailing handonheritage@oxfordshire.gov.uk and a form will be provided for booking. Drop in will also be possible to some of these talks depending on numbers.
  • A special homecoming: The Rosmerta found at Swalcliffe will be back for one day only on temporary display.

The barn will be open for exploration. You will also be able to meet the wonderful volunteers who keep the barns open.
