Reducing the risk on our roads.
Every year, we attend countless accidents on our roads. However careful we are as road users, we are human and can be distracted. Other people can behave unexpectedly which can lead to us having to make quick decisions.
Being aware of the risks and planning ahead can make a difference.
Over 90 percent of collisions are due to human error. We have some top tips on how you can avoid an accident when driving.
There are two main causes of accidents.
1. Defects and issues with the design of the road
We are working hard to identify, improve and reduce risks associated with our roads.
Being in a car provides a lot of protection. Other road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, are often most at risk. The Vision Zero initiative aims to reduce deaths and injuries on our roads. The initiative looks to identify collision hotspots and improve our road network.
The data collected will determine where the biggest risks are, and the highways team will review what can be done to reduce those risks. For example, we might change a junction or improve signage and road markings.

Road maintenance
