Tips for cyclists

We all share the road and with that comes risk. Take a look at the top tips to help you stay safe.

As a cyclist, you are one of the most vulnerable road users. You don't have seatbelts, airbags or side impact bars to protect you. How you approach each ride and deal with the hazards is really important. Remember that other drivers have difficulty judging the speed of your bike.

Keep yourself safe

  • cycle at least half a metre from the kerb to avoid drains and gutters
  • take extra care when filtering through traffic as drivers may not always be aware of you
  • if a road junction is busy and you feel unsafe, you can get off and push your bike on the pavement
  • don't weave in and out of traffic or change direction suddenly without signalling
  • ensure you bike is safe to ride - get it serviced regularly
  • if you wear a helmet, make sure it is fitted correctly
  • it can be helpful to wear bright or high visibility clothing
  • fit reflectors to your bike
  • if you are riding at night, or in low light, use front and rear bike lights
  • make eye contact where possible so you know drivers have seen you

Make the right decisions

Obey traffic signs and lights

The Highway Code also applies to cyclists.

Ride safely

  • do not ride on the pavement unless it is also a cycle path
  • moderate your speed and take care when passing pedestrians on cycle paths
  • give pedestrians priority when necessary
  • get a bell fitted to your bike and use it to inform pedestrians of your presence
