Moving into adulthood
Managing money, travel and living independently.
As you get older, there are things you need to know to help you work and live. This involves managing money, travelling and living independently.
Managing money
Opening a bank account can be scary, but it's really easy. You can do it online. Look at the bank's website you think might work for you or go into their branch. You'll usually need to book an appointment to open a bank account in a branch. They will explain what you need to bring.
You will get a debit card with your bank account. A debit card takes money straight out of your account when you use it.
If you want a credit card, you must apply for that separately, although some banks do provide both.
If you are unsure, always ask.
The Oxfordshire Specialist Advice Service (OSAS) has a telephone advice line and email service to help you:
- open a bank account
- access benefits
- manage your money
This short YouTube video might help when opening a bank account.
My Max Card helps save money on great days out with your family or friends. You can use it to get free or discounted admission at venues across the UK.
You may be able to access financial support to study from the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA). You do not need to pay it back and what you get will depend on your individual needs.
There are lots of free services available if you are struggling with managing your money.

Travelling independently
You may want to apply for a disabled person's bus pass to help you move around more easily.
Travel safely and confidently
The OXME website has information about travelling safely and confidently when you're going to school, work, or out to have fun.
Independent travel training can help you use public transport. It's one-on-one training based on your needs. It will help you plan routes, learn how to use a bus pass and manage personal safety.
The My Life My Choice travel buddy scheme helps people with learning disabilities build confidence to travel alone on buses and trains.
Accessible travel
If you want to get out and about, you may feel uncertain about how accessible places will be for you. Your local disability group may offer support to build confidence in independent travel. You can find groups listed on Activities Oxfordshire.
The AccessAble website has information about accessible venues across the UK, so you can be confident when you arrive.
Living independently
After turning 18, you may need help living at home. For example, you may need personal care or daily living aids and adaptations.
You can request an assessment to find out whether your needs can be met under the Care Act. Find out what support is available to help you live independently, on our living at home pages.
If you feel you need support, the Shared Lives Scheme might be right for you. The scheme gives disabled adults the opportunity to live as independently as possible. One option is to stay in a Shared Lives carer's home, sharing their family life. Another option is for a Shared Lives carer to support you to live in your own home.
Visit our extra care housing page to find out more about:
- applying for affordable accommodation
- grants that can improve your home
- help to live independently
- help with the cost of housing
Your district council housing department can also offer advice.
The Young People's Supported Accommodation Services (YPSA) provides a safe place to live while you're supported into employment, education, or training. It's short-term but designed to help you meet your long-term needs.
Make your own decisions
You have the right to make your own decisions from age 16. Of course, your parents, carers, or other family members can support you.
You can make sure you have your say by reading more about your rights to make your own decisions. Childline has some information that can help you understand more.
Proving your age can be difficult and embarrassing if someone doesn't believe you. You can apply for the PASS scheme and get a card that will help you prove your age.
