00:00:00,330 --> 00:00:01,740
Everybody absolutely loves it.

00:00:01,740 --> 00:00:05,580
So whether you're 50,40, or whatever you are

00:00:05,580 --> 00:00:07,150
but you can't move in here till you're 55 of course

00:00:07,190 --> 00:00:08,100
can you though.

00:00:11,580 --> 00:00:12,510
I'm Brenda Harris

00:00:12,960 --> 00:00:14,160
my friend Brian who lives next door

00:00:14,610 --> 00:00:16,220
he's been a friend of mine for 53 years.

00:00:16,300 --> 00:00:18,100
He kept talking about this place

00:00:18,130 --> 00:00:19,0 80
and I said

00:00:19,320 --> 00:00:21,120
Oh, I'll come down one day to visit you.

00:00:21,420 --> 00:00:22,710
And my husband was very

00:00:22,710 --> 00:00:24,810
very sick for three or four years

00:00:25,290 --> 00:00:26,230
and we came because of him.

00:00:26,330 --> 00:00:28,950
I thought it'd be nice to have a ground floor

00:00:28,950 --> 00:00:30,270
no stairs and all that.

00:00:33,210 --> 00:00:35,050
A lot of the people here

00:00:35,130 --> 00:00:37,170
their children say come on, mum dad

00:00:37,080 --> 00:00:38,120
we want you here.

00:00:38,150 --> 00:00:40,120
You've got 24/7 carers

00:00:40,150 --> 00:00:42,030
and you're near your family.

00:00:42,050 --> 00:00:44,010
It's reassuring for the family

00:00:44,020 --> 00:00:45,160
knowing your mum and dad are safe.

00:00:45,180 --> 00:00:46,150
There's a lot of people that

00:00:46,190 --> 00:00:47,180
can't come out of their rooms

00:00:47,210 --> 00:00:49,120
so when the kitchen's open

00:00:49,130 --> 00:00:51,080
they have their meals delivered.

00:00:51,150 --> 00:00:52,100
They've got carers

00:00:52,150 --> 00:00:54,130
come in, some are 24/7

00:00:54,990 --> 00:00:57,080
some are just whatever's allocated

00:00:57,150 --> 00:00:59,150
twice a day or whatever.

00:00:59,220 --> 00:01:00,160
Do what we want

00:01:00,230 --> 00:01:01,190
when what we want.

00:01:05,100 --> 00:01:07,150
I join in 99% of the stuff

00:01:07,200 --> 00:01:08,120
what's going

00:01:09,000 --> 00:01:10,170
bingo

00:01:10,180 --> 00:01:11,110
art

00:01:11,160 --> 00:01:13,000
I've even got my pictures on the wall

00:01:13,050 --> 00:01:13,000
I'm going to show you when you come in.

00:01:17,030 --> 00:01:17,145
There'll be always

00:01:17,150 --> 00:01:18,210
someone to talk to.

00:01:19,180 --> 00:01:20,200
So if you're lonely

00:01:20,180 --> 00:01:22,200
you just come out your room

00:01:22,070 --> 00:01:23,200
sit here and just wait for somebody

00:01:23,250 --> 00:01:25,080
to join you, really, you know.

00:01:25,170 --> 00:01:26,200
I wouldn't have never spoke

00:01:26,230 --> 00:01:29,100
to as many people if I hadn't lived here.

00:01:29,120 --> 00:01:30,200
I'd just been stuck in my house

00:01:30,220 --> 00:01:32,025
and that would have been that really.

00:01:32,160 --> 00:01:33,190
Got our own front door

00:01:34,060 --> 00:01:35,080
it's all soundproofed

00:01:35,150 --> 00:01:36,950
it's all done for safety

00:01:37,010 --> 00:01:38,130
the bathroom you can't slip on

00:01:38,200 --> 00:01:40,090
everything's thought about.

00:01:40,160 --> 00:01:41,170
I love my flat

00:01:42,140 --> 00:01:44,070
yeah I love my flat.

Eligibility

Criteria vary depending on the type of extra care housing sought.  For council-commissioned schemes you will need:

  • to be over 55 (under 55’s by exception)
  • to have eligible care needs assessed by Oxfordshire County Council
  • be eligible to join the District or City Council housing register, and
  • can demonstrate a local connection. This generally means you have lived in the area for at least 6 months or are permanently employed in the area.

Most schemes will be flexible and consider people with learning disabilities or other disabilities who may not have reached 55 but who have care and support needs.

Cost

Most of our commissioned extra care flats are affordable to rent. Some are available as shared ownership (part buy, part rent), and in some schemes, flats are for sale.

Knowing the charges you must pay before signing any rent or sale agreements is important. Costs to consider include:

  • rent (if renting an extra care housing property) or ground rent if you’ve purchased a leasehold property
  • service charge
  • care and support charges, including mandatory charges for the on-site peace of mind service
  • daily living costs, including council tax and utilities, food, and transportation
  • meal services: some schemes may include a discretionary or mandatory meal charge

Service length

There is no time limit. Extra care housing is built to accommodate adaptations that truly make it a home for life, should you wish.

Financial support

Financial support that may be available to help towards some, or all of the costs of care from Oxfordshire County Council if you have eligible care and support needs.

Support for rent and service charges may be available through Housing Benefit if you meet qualifying criteria such as receiving pension credit.

Help with rent deposit costs may also be available through local council’s rent deposit or discretionary housing payment schemes:

Getting support

To get a care assessment, request an assessment of your needs or contact the Adult Social and Healthcare Team

If you already have a social worker, occupational therapist or another support worker, they should be able to advise you on your options.

Next steps

Once you have requested an assessment of your needs, you will be contacted to arrange the assessment. If the assessment confirms you have eligible care needs, you will be supported to apply for our commissioned extra care housing.
