Eyes on the road

  • Using a mobile phone while driving increases the risk of a crash by four times.

Mobile phones

It is against the law to use a hand-held mobile phone while driving.

Even a two-second glance at your phone while driving at 30 mph means you've missed 100 feet of road.

Avoid the temptation - put your phone in the glove compartment.

Staying focused on the road

  • avoid distractions, like changing music or talking
  • if a passenger is distracting you, pull over safely and ask them to stop or get out
  • to make or take a call, stop in a safe spot (not the motorway hard shoulder)
  • let passengers handle calls

Texting and driving

Texting while driving makes drivers over 20 times more likely to crash. It causes three types of distraction:

  1. Visual – taking your eyes off the road.
  2. Manual – taking your hands off the wheel.
  3. Cognitive – taking your mind off driving.

In-car technology

Sat navs and other tech can also distract you. Set everything up before you start driving. If adjustments are needed, pull over safely before making changes.
